Notes on setup of Windows 95 ---------------------------- Fast Window Display ------------------- Removing that Shrink-Expand (sliding) window method Win95 uses as a default to method where they snap into place (faster). From InfoWorld article: 1) Run: regedit 2) Hit "+" next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER 3) Hit "+" next to Control Panel 4) Click DeskTop folder 5) Find line in right panel with "MinAnimate", change value to 0 (zero). 6) Quick and restart. Not Able To Print Blue-Print or Frequent GPF's ---------------------------------------------- Reduce Graphic acceleration setting to reduece GDI problems. 1) In Control-Panel, System, select Performance tab. 2) Select Graphics button. 3) Move 'Hardware Acceleration' slide from full right to second from right position. 4) Quick and restart. Network Setup ------------- Will need disks from Win95 floppy set marked: Cab1, Cab6, Cab11, Cab12 Remove all entries from config.sys, autoexec.bat files that have anything to do with Netware, ODI, IFSHLP, etc.. Check their c:\NET.CFG file to see what driver they are using, note interrupt and port. Go into Control Panel-Networks, delete all entries. Then select Adapters, go to the one called Novell/Anthem, select NE2000 compatible, set INT and PORT, ignore any indications that it thinks there is a conflict (* by entry), hit OK. Go into Netware Client, if fileserver is shown in Primary Server list, select it from the dropdown list again. Win95 will want you to restart computer, go ahead. After restarting, login, this first time it may not process Login Scripts, which may cause some errors, ignore them. If it doesn't process the login scripts then: Go into Control Panel-Networks, select Netware Client, select primary server. It will restart again, this time after logging in it should say it is "Processing Login Scripts" at some point after entering their password. Done with Netware Setup. Setting up Win95 as a Netware Print Server, replaces "rprinter" method. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: when done, the Win95 print server does not appear on any Queue/Server status windows, but it does appear as a user if you use Novell's UserLlist command. Apparently, Win95 is just going into the bindery and checking for files to print, it then prints them. Novell is not actually active in this process. Because this is a polled process by Win95, it may take up to 30-40 seconds before it checks the queue and processes any jobs waiting, unlike Novell's Pserver/Rprinter which processed fairly quickly. Use PCONSOLE to define a new Printer Server that will be used by a Win95 user to determine the queues it will be responsible for de-spooling. You can only use 3 of the 16 possible printers, and only local LPT ports. Example: Server: WIN95_JEFF Printer 0: Jeff's Laser, Local LPT1:, leave the rest at defaults Queues Serviced By Printer: JALASER Also, if the queues the Win95 user will now handle are listed under another Server definition, then delete them from the old server, unload and reload server so they are no longer handled by the old server. See "Using Microsoft Print Services for Netware" in the Win95 Resource Kit for instructions on how to actually install the Print Agent. Once installed and a printer has been setup on the user's system, a new tab should be visible (not usually there), called 'Spool', select Spool, select server, select Server name from list. That's it.
